New MetService Smartphone Apps

Yesterday saw the release of MetService’s new smartphone app, built for both iPhone and Android markets.

The app is location based, and includes the 10-day ‘Towns and Cities’ forecast, Severe Weather Warnings, latest video forecast from MetService TV, real-time rain radar and 3-day rain forecast, and traffic cams – all for your current location by default, and for all other NZ Towns & Cities via an easy-to-use menu.

There are some great interactive features, including the ability to share the forecast via Twitter and Facebook, and change out background images to personalise the app to your ‘weather mood’.  Interactive Manager Craig Delany says, “We love the idea of people being able to make the app their own by uploading a picture of their kids jumping in puddles for a rainy day forecast, or their favourite summer holiday snap for a sunny forecast”.

Find out more about these and other app features in the following video:

The MetService app is ad-free and available now for $2.59 on iTunes and Google Play.

  1. Great app – downloaded it as soon as I could. Though a major fault is the rain details under current conditions don’t match the full site. I have noticed regardless of the location, the app has 0.0mm where the full site has rain recorded. Perfect example is right now for New Plymouth (12:15am on 24 June 2012) – full site has 8.0mm for New Plymouth whereas the app (iPhone) has 0.0mm. In fact the same applies for Levin and Wanganui also. The full site shows significant rain falling but the app continues to show 0.0mm. I have noticed this fault from very early on after downloading the app. It needs to be fixed otherwise the app loses it’s credibility!

    • Hi glens50, no at this stage the app just has the Towns and Cities forecasts. We decided we wouldn’t try and put all the sections (rural, mountain, marine) in one app to keep things simple and for ease of navigation. You can currently access marine information on the mobile site m.metservice.com.

  2. A widget that tells the time and is similar to the accuweather widget on android would convince me to buy it.
In the meantime I have a reluctance to fork out money for apps on android so I’ll hold off for now.
Seems like a great app but I like to be able to see the weather and current temps from my home screen.

  3. From the text this looks like a great app, and I’ll definitely try it out.
I assume the $2.59 goes on making swoopy the video that shows a lot of a phone flicking around using wizzy graphics, but not much of the actual content of the app.

    • Thanks Nick, we hope you enjoy the app and find we’ve put a lot of work into making it a fun and useful app! Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive so far. We are lucky to have a multi-media person in-house to create the video.
